The Necessity and Problems of Environmental Education

Abstract

The industrial development and advance of our material civilization has brought about a high standard of living. But, the urban concentration of population and an increase of contaminative materials has caused our natural environment to become a serious problem, while we still have continued economic growth. Especially, environmental pollution becomes an obstacle to progress on the enlargement of social security and the realization of a welfare state. We must have a clear consciousness and a correct understanding of our natural environment in order to maintain environmental quality. And this can be achieved only through environmental education. My findings are as follows; 1. Educational programs for both youthes and adults need to be formulated. 2. The environment is to be treated as a comprehensive science. 3. The educational purpose is to be based on an efficient development of the community and an adaptability toward nature. 4. The person in charge of environmental education should be a spokesman as well as an advisor and an environmentalist. The suggestions derived from this study are as follows; 1. The purpose and contents for environmental education should be detailed. 2. A development and preservation of the environment are all important elements toward education. 3. The person in charge of environmental education should be eligible for teaching. 4. The educational facilities and materials about the environment should be sufficient. 5. The educational institutions concerned with the environment should be enlarged, not only quantitatively, but also qualitatively. 6. The government authorities must keep in mind that environmental education is a vital function of the government at all levels, but its greatest manifestation is that of responsibility for the environment at all levels.
